Something to Bark About

June 29, 2006

Moriko has been ADOPTED (now called Yoda), and is looking much better and is a happy little guy, but his hair will not likely grow back on his tail or back end.  He gets along very well with his new canine sisters and even the cats in the home. Moriko still makes appearances at our adoption days just to show off. We know you have a great new home Moriko, have a great life... you deserve it.

May 4, 2006 - Moriko has been at the vet and had a complete shave as you can see in his latest photo. In the photo he is wearing the latest doggie fashion but you can see that he is quite emancipated but does have quite the sweet face. He is still having problems digesting dog food but as each day passes that is getting better as well. Moriko has a great zest to live and he is showing more and more of his character each day as the trust builds with his foster family.  He is very hand shy but overall is a great little dog that gets along well with other dogs and seems to be fine with the baby in the home. Moriko is still a work in progress as we are waiting to see if the hair comes back on his hind end, and to ensure he is healthy before he is placed up for adoption.

April 26, 2006 - Anne and Jean drove out near Bruderheim to rescue a dog that was living under a bridge and looked to have lived there for some time. We made our way down the embankment and we spotted him curled up on top of a beaver dam that crossed a creek. When he heard us coming he raised his sorry little head but we could not see his sweet little face due to the mats in his fur and the sticks that were stuck to his shoulder and face. As we approached this little guy he struggled to get up and was still warning us with a growl but as we got closer and showed him some food we were able to entice him across the dam to us. We fed him for a little while and when he began to wag his sad little bare tail in trust, Anne was able to lasso him under the front legs (his neck was covered in thorns and twigs so a neck restraint was not possible), and lift him into an awaiting crate for transport to a new life.

The whole time, all we could think was “How could you” referring to the people who obviously dumped this little man in the middle of nowhere. He could have been coyote bait or an eagle could have easily carried him off...

We drove back to St. Albert and he was quiet and content in the warmth of the car and we got him back to Jean's place. There we gave him some clean water which he lapped up happily and then we began to try and cut as much of the mats out and to release the thorny twigs and branches from his front legs, shoulders and his under belly. After getting rid of the fur under his belly we were able to determine that we had a boy! During his hair cut (2 hours) he kept licking my hand and wagging his tail, obviously happy at being able to move freely again. Anne was only able to trim the one side as he was squirming quite a bit, obviously had enough. It has been a long night already for this little guy so we just gave him more clean water and food and let him go to the potty, and then he climbed happily on his blankie for a warm safe sleep for the night.

April 27/06 – First thing this morning Jean took our little mass of hair and dirt to the Morinville Vet for much needed vet attention. The Vet determined that our little Moriko is only about 2 years old.  His little bare bum was so distended and we have to have his anal glands emptied. Moriko is also getting some scrapings done to try and eliminate reasons for the bare back end and tail. The Vets will also be sedating our little Moriko to shave his coat down because the mats are so bad. With a good diet, care and when his coat comes back in, this little boy will become the beautiful dog we know he is!

Safe Haven Animal Rescue could use some donations towards Moriko’s Vet bills and care, if you can help us out please contact us at 780-707-5753 or email us at dogsrus@shaw.ca

We will keep a journal of Moriko’s  progress for you on our website and we are sure we will find him a GREAT HOME that he so deserves!
